Now that our third baby, Charlie, is a little over 10 months (how?) I have definitely realized what my favorite baby items are. From the newborn stage to this fun 10 month stage, there are a few items I really couldn’t have lived without.
A lot has changed since creating my registry for Jack and Remy. First baby(s) and you think you need ALL the things. Of course you want to be prepared, but I actually regret not just waiting to see what they would need once they got here. We accumulated so many things I thought were absolutely necessary, and we really only used them for a short period, if at all.
I feel like this list is pretty simple and helpful for most moms and babies. Whenever one of my friends gets pregnant and starts making their registry I feel like I wish I had this list to send them – and now I do! Every baby is SO different and there is no guessing or telling what you’ll need throughout the baby phase, but hopefully this is helpful!
Natursutten Ortho Pacifier – My favorite pacifier (even though Charlie refused to take any paci’s most of the time) because it is made completely of rubber and nothing can get stuck in little nooks and crannies (like water in a hollow paci nipple). It’s also small and apparently good for maintaining the orthodontic shape of a babies mouth.
Organic Bamboo Hooded Baby Towel – Obviously you don’t need this exact one – but there’s nothing better than a soft hooded baby towel for bath time. I got Charlie a couple new ones before he was born.
Burt’s Bees Organic Crib Sheet – Jack and Remy ruined MANY crib sheets when they were babies, and are still ruining them as toddlers, so I learned to order only Burt’s Bees. They’re affordable, organic and durable, and you don’t feel as bad when baby poop stains ruin them 😉
Baby Jogger Deluxe Pram – One thing I absolutely wanted when I was pregnant with Charlie was the bassinet for my Baby Jogger stroller. I didn’t have them for Jack and Remy and I was determined to walk my single baby around in his bassinet haha I bought it, and I used it for a solid 4 months, probably every day. I love stroller bassinet’s because I walk so often and it gave Charlie an opportunity to lay on his tummy while I walked and in the Texas heat it seemed to make him less hot.
Rohm Portable White Noise Machine – LOVE this. We also have the Dohm, same company, but prefer this small version. It’s also louder than the larger version which we like, and we take it whenever we travel. I believe the Hushh can be hung on a carseat or stroller.
Chicco LullaGo Bassinet – I used this for all three of our kiddos (Jack and Remy both fit together for a while when they were preemie newborns) and loved it even more with Charlie. Not only is it small, sleek and simple, it’s really functional and the perfect size for newborn to about 6 months (once baby starts to sit up you have to move on from this bassinet). It is SO easy to store once you’re done with it which I love. If you are using a Dok-a-tot (the small version, not large) or a Snuggle Me Organic lounger, they fit inside perfectly.
Organic Muslin Swaddle Blanket– I use these for so many things. I swaddled Jack and Remy in the early days with them, but Charlie never wanted to be swaddled so I mainly used them for nursing covers and bassinet and car seat covers. Don’t buy traditional nursing covers – just knot two of the corners of your muslin blanket and put your head through! Muslin is breathable for baby, and you can unknot and throw the blanket into the wash as soon as you’re done. I keep one in my car, stroller and my diaper bag and I am always so happy when I have to nurse and can just grab my blanket.
Boppy Newborn Lounger – Another item I used like crazy with Jack and Remy and Charlie. Just lay them down for a nap, carry the entire poppy to another room, bring it to a friend’s…love everything about it. The best part – the entire boppy is machine washable and I still have the same one I got 3 years ago.
Muslin Carseat Cover – Another item I recommend to everyone. I got this for Charlie and it was my favorite when he was really little and I was trying to protect him from germs and everyone wanting to touch him. Simply zip it up and no one will peek at your baby you’re trying to keep healthy 😉
Organic Cotton Waterproof Crib Mattress Pad – Affordable and SO necessary. Mattresses aren’t cheap and if you want yours to stay nice without stains – this is a must! All 3 of our crib mattresses look brand new because no pee, poop or throw up incidents have touched them. I would buy a couple of these in case you need to throw one in the wash in the middle of nap or bedtime.
Colgate Eco Dual Firmness Crib Mattress – The mattresses we have for all 3 kids. Organic cover, and one side is very firm for a newborn and the other side is a little softer when they are toddlers.
Graco Pack ‘n Play – You need a pack n’ play. With my first pregnancy I truly didn’t understand why you need one of these. Is it something to keep them contained in a room? Do they just play in a pack n’ play? I was confused! But turns out we’ve used ours when other kids are over and may need to nap and for countless trips (load it up into the car for a hotel stay, or check it at the airport). I am recommending this cheap Graco one because I like it more than my bougie $200 Guava pack n play. It is easier to set up, sits higher off the ground, and it’s easier to fit a fitted sheet onto it. With Jack and Remy I only had one, but I recommend having one for each kiddo that sleeps in a crib.
Here are links to the mattress pad and sheets I use for our pack n plays.
BABYBJORN Bouncer – Another thing I LOVE and really think is worth the price tag. If you’re bottle feeding, you can use it for that, otherwise it’s just a safe place to put baby when you need to put them down but also keep them entertained by bouncing. They can kick their legs and make themselves bounce, too. I never knew this with Jack and Remy (I let my smart friend borrow it and she told me) but the covers can be put in your washing machine.
BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier One– This carrier has gotten A LOT of use. It was used a lot with the twins but probably even more with Charlie. It’s similar to the Ergo 360, I just like the style of the Babybjorn more.
Solly Baby Wrap – I love wraps and baby wearing. I wore Charlie quite a bit and loved this one!
Baby Jogger City Select Stroller – Still love this stroller, almost 3 years later. I mainly use it as a single stroller right now for Charlie, but a couple days ago I added the second seat and took Jack and Remy for a walk. One thing to consider – I walk a lot and the sun is shining a lot in south Texas, so the black fabric has faded somewhat. If I could do it again, I think I would pick a heather gray that wouldn’t fade as much.
Zutano Cozie Bootie – These weren’t a thing when Jack and Remy were born but for Charlie I LOVED them. Perfect for the cold hospital and when they’re newborns and little socks don’t stay on their feet. Also perfect for the entire first year if you live in a cold climate.
Honest Company City Backpack – my diaper bag for Charlie – love the look of it, but you may want to purchase some insulated bags for bottles if you ever carry bottles with you! Like these.
Play Mat – I looked long and hard for this large non-toxic baby mat and it was probably one of my favorite items I had for Jack and Remy when they were in the sitting stage. They could spit up and it would wipe right off, they could fall over when they were learning to sit and it was soft and cushy, I could easily roll it up and store it, and it’s not an eye-sore when it’s out! Charlie skipped the sit-and-play stage and turned right into a mover and crawler, so I was sad I didn’t need this for him.
Manhattan Toy Rattle & Sensory Teether – Loved this for all three boys when they were learning to grab and chew on things. It’s super light weight and easy to hold.
Itzy Ritzy Baby Teether – a cute teether you can just throw in the dishwasher at night.
Avent Natural Glass Bottles – some people don’t think glass bottles are a good idea because they may break – but let me tell you – I bottle fed Jack and Remy for a year and not one of mine broke! They also still look BRAND new because they are glass. Silicone or plastic bottles start looking yellow or old after a while which is why I am team glass for baby bottles. Obviously need to get new nipples with each baby, but the bottle itself stays perfect.
Clip on Mini Fan – I use this on our stroller to keep Charlie cool on walks. Love it for these hot, humid summer days.
WubbaNub Pacifier – These little animal pacifiers are genius because they double as a lovie for your baby to hold onto in their crib, carseat, wherever. Charlie doesn’t take a paci, but he LOVES playing with this in his crib. You can also throw the entire thing into the washing machine, which is always a good thing with babies.
Angelcare Baby Bath – I LOVE this tub. Really cheap, you can hang it to try, and it works well from birth-about 6 months.
HALO Muslin Sleep Sack – Big fan of sleep sacks at the Bensons. You know they are safe and warm when they have this on.
Silicone Baby Bibs – Perfect bibs because they wash off and don’t stain. We bring ours to all restaurants and use it at every meal at our house. The little pocket makes it so they don’t drop and waste as much food.
Silicone Suction Placemat – Another must-have if you plan to take your kiddos to restaurants.
