The star of this recipe is really the homemade taco seasoning (although the taco salad was good too). I love to make my own seasonings and this is one I use all the time. Making your own blend allows you to control exactly what goes into your food. Packaged taco seasonings are really convenient, but the ingredients aren’t worth it.
The biggest offenders – corn maltodextrin(genetically modified and highly processed), corn syrup solids (genetically modified and highly processed), caramel color (a known carcinogen), modified corn starch (genetically modified corn) & “natural flavors” (natural flavors can mean MSG).
It’s so easy to make your own and tastes just like the packaged seasoning without the hard to pronounce additives.
Measure all ingredients into a small mason jar, shake, and you have seasoning! Make enough for one batch or double or triple for multiple taco nights.
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (I used cayenne pepper)
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1 tbsp cumin
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp tapioca starch
- Combine all seasoning ingredients into a mason jar or small bowl
- Depending on how much seasoning you like, add 2 tablespoons at a time to your taco meat of choice (chicken, ground beef, etc)
- Add 1/4 cup water and stir
- Add more seasoning to taste
- You can omit the tapioca starch in the seasoning blend, but I like a thicker sauce for my tacos
