This BBQ sauce is so good. It’s sweet, tangy, a little bit spicy & has all my favorite barbecue flavors combined into one sauce. I made it last week for some crock pot short ribs and was so pleased. I had never made homemade BBQ sauce before so really didn’t know what to expect, but it was some of the best I have had. Not only is it good, it has only a few healthy ingredients so you can feel good about slathering as much as you want onto whatever you’re eating.
- Tomato Paste
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Yellow Mustard
- Local Honey
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Chili Powder
- Worchestire Sauce
- Salt
I’m all about about reading food labels to find out which ingredients are being used in certain products. It’s so important when buying processed foods to know what to look for. Below are 2 popular BBQ sauce brands I am sure a lot of you are familiar with. Here are the biggest offenders on the ingredient lists:
- High Fructose Corn Syrup – Can cause tissue damage that may lead to obesity, diabetes, and also heart disease.
- Caramel Color – Almost all colorants approved for use in food are derived from coal tar and may contain lead and arsenic. Most coal tar colors could potentially cause cancer.
- Modified Food Starch – a different name for MSG – MSG is an excitotoxin, meaning it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain damage to varying degrees. It can potentially trigger or worsen learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and more.
With all of that said, small amounts of these ingredients shouldn’t harm you, but it’s good to at least know what the ingredients are and which to avoid. By making your own condiments, you never have to worry:)
This sauce is really easy and requires about 5 minutes of your time to make. Melt your butter in a sauce pan, add all the other ingredients then cook for 5 minutes. Your kitchen will smell amazing! When it’s done cooking, pour into a glass jar or container, let it cool then store in the refrigerator until you need it.
- 2 tbsp grass-fed butter
- 1 7oz jar tomato paste
- 1/4 c apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 c local honey
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 c water
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat
- Add all other ingredients and stir to combine
- Let the sauce cook for 5 minutes
- Taste for additional seasonings
- Pour into a glass jar or container and let cool
- Store in the refrigerator until ready to use

Yum, sounds great and just in time for BBQ season thanks for sharing. How long does it stay fresh in the jar?

Hi Mels! Vinegar is a natural preservative so it should last for up to 2 months in the fridge un-opened. As soon as you open it, I would use it within 1-2 weeks!
