Another week has gone by without any recipes and I’m sorry! I have been working on some new ideas for the blog, including more about fertility and nutrition since this is my niche in the nutrition world, so recipes have been put off a bit. I promise they will return. My appetite is also so much better so I’ve been thinking of fun recipes a lot more lately. I’m thinking about doing a series on freezer-friendly crock pot meals (prep everything, freeze in a large baggie, thaw, then just put into the crock pot), so stay tuned.
How was everyone’s week? Mine was pretty uneventful minus our first anniversary on Monday! I can’t believe it’s already been a year since we tied the knot. It went so fast, but I also feel like so much has happened. Right before we got married last year we found out we were moving to Houston for Mitch’s job, so we got married, packed up our beloved Denver house and moved down to Houston. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we moved here! We also found out about these twins during our first year of marriage, so that definitely adds to the list of big events:)
So, week 17! It’s crazy how quickly these weeks fly by. This week has been pretty good. I’ve continued to feel better than before so that’s nice. I was pretty tired a couple days this week and had to take a nap one day, but other than that it’s been fine and I think I can attribute the tired days to not sleeping well for two of the nights. Dinner is still my biggest challenge, and I could really go without it most days, but I try to force what I can. My appetite is great when I wake up and for lunch, and usually in the afternoons, then dinner is just a no-g0. Especially when it involves meat or chicken. So weird! But, if ice cream is involved, I’m good to go 😉
Week 17
The twins: babies are the size of white onions and are weighing in at 5oz!
Craving: vanilla bean ice cream, the same cold creamy things as before like greek yogurt, whole milk and cottage cheese, peaches still!, peach crisp (gave in and made it this week), mashed potatoes (because I made some on Monday for our anniversary and we had leftovers all week…), green beans, strawberries, kombucha, banana pudding (the nilla wafer kind) – a healthier version may need to be invented for the blog
Aversions: Meat and protein at nighttime, blackberries and raspberries don’t sound good, noodles and pasta-like things (except spaghetti squash)
Wearing: My same clothes, but they are getting more uncomfortable. I came home from Ohio and put on my favorite nike running shorts and they were snug. Then I put on my lulu lemon running shorts later this week and they were so uncomfortable and hurt my lower stomach…so I am thinking dresses are going to quickly become my best friend. My workout leggings are okay, but are also feeling really tight on my stomach. I’ve heard Target has some affordable workout maternity leggings, so maybe that’s my next purchase.
Sleeping: I slept amazing a few nights this week, but then also had some not so good nights too where I woke up and couldn’t fall back to sleep. But this isn’t anything different from before I got pregnant.
Names: We’ve given it a litttle more thought, but not really! I feel like some people know their name(s) right away, but that’s just not us. We don’t really talk about it much, and I think it’ll be closer to the end when we actually decide. Names are tough! It’ll also obviously depend on our next ultrasound to see if we’re having two boys or a boy and a girl.
The bump: I think I am getting much bigger. Even if it doesn’t look that way, it definitely feels that way. It seems like ever since I hit 16 weeks I’ve really started to show. I also get these weird mild pains that I think are my uterus starting to stretch out more, and those didn’t happen before this week. Like I said, my clothes are starting to fit tighter and get more uncomfortable, so I think I am going to start looking pretty prego really soon!
Exercise: I went to the gym twice this week to walk on the treadmill, lift dumbbells and stretch and it felt really good. I still miss walking/running my pup each day, but the gym has been doing the trick. I also found a few good weight workouts on Women’sHealth.com that I am going to try to do 2-3x/week to help keep my muscles (and my bod) toned.
Baby purchases: Baby hangers! And some shelves for the nursery/guest room (which we may not keep). Other than that, still nothing. We probably won’t buy much until after we have our showers so we can see what we really need. I also want to go to target and look at a couple cribs I found online, and then to Babies R Us because I heard they let you try out carseats to see if they fit in your car. I am almost positive two carseats will fit in my SUV, but I want to make sure before we settle on something.
Nursery: I started giving this a little more thought this week. Since our guest room will be combined with the nursery, we have to get a little bit creative when it comes to fitting everything. I originally wanted Ikea cribs, but found another crib I really like at Target. It’s convertible (which the Ikea crib was too) but I just like the style of this one a bit more. Click on the link to see the different ways it converts after baby is done with it. I also LOVE white, so the cribs will be white for sure. I am also thinking that one crib might be able to work for a while since I’ve heard twins sometimes like to sleep together. So, I think we will start by building one crib, and see how it goes, then build the other if we have to. They will probably be sleeping in our room anyways for a few months, so no need to crowd the “guest room” more than necessary.
Supplements: Same as last week, but once again, not being very good about taking my probiotic (I feel okay about this because I eat so much yogurt and drink a lot of kombucha which both are GREAT sources of probiotics). I also upped my fish oil dosage. I figure if I was taking 1 gram before I got pregnant, I should at least be taking 2 grams now that I am building two more brains:) I’m also considering adding an iron supplement to my list because I think it may help with energy but can’t decide.
What’s next: Our anatomy scan on 7/5! This is a long, very thorough ultrasound at the Maternal Fetal Medicine dr. that will take lots of measurements of the twins. It’s also where we should know for sure if these are two boys, or a boy and a girl (we are both really thinking it’s two boys).
Weight gain: I went to my OB on Wednesday for a “regular checkup” (weight, blood pressure, baby’s heartbeats) and it looks like I’ve gained 7.5lbs since week 8 (my first apt I had). I feel good about this! I go back to the same Dr. at 21 weeks, so hopefully I’ve gained close to 20 by that point (doesn’t seem like I have to try very hard, lately;) Also, hearing the heart beats is so fun! About a month ago the heart beats were really fast (about 160 beats/minute), now they are about 140. The bigger they get, the slower the heart beat.
Stretch marks: I am adding this category because I think it’s interesting! So far I don’t have any but will be keeping you updated. A lot of people swear by belly butters (and a couple of my friends have gotten me some and I will use them), but right now I am just taking some “preventative” measures and drinking collagen protein daily. Collagen has long been shown to help reduce wrinkles and stretch marks (as well as help with healthy hair and nails), so I decided I will be diligent about taking it and see what happens. I like Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides, but Great Lakes Collagen is also great. I was taking it long before I got pregnant too (to help with skin (trying to keep this skin looking young), hair and nails), so hopefully that helps. I also think it’s a really great way to get more protein into your diet without using a scary protein powder with a million ingredients. It’s completely tasteless and dissolves into water (or coffee).
Any worries? Same as before. Zika and getting diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes around 28 weeks. Lowering my sugar and carbs should help with GD, and avoiding going outside will help me avoid Zika, so I am feeling pretty good about both. I’ll explain a little more in detail about Gestational Diabetes when I approach 28 weeks – it’s interesting!
