Another double-week post – sorry last week’s post didn’t happen and this post is LONG! Last Friday morning went by super quick because I was packing for a quick Dallas trip and then we had our first meeting with our doula before I hit the road, so I had little blog time. These posts are hard to do because I tend to forget the week before… but I will try to rack my brain the best I can!
A lot has happened over the past two weeks. An OB apt, chat with our doula, my glucose tolerance test to test for gestational diabetes and a hospital visit because I didn’t think I was feeling baby A move as much as I should. More on all of that below.
All in all I have still been feeling pretty good – last week I felt fine minus that glucose test but I am definitely starting to get a little more uncomfortable. I know this is to be expected as I get bigger and these twins grow, and I am super grateful I am half-way into my 29th week and I am just now starting to experience some of the uncomfortable aspects of pregnancy (minus morning sickness, that was the worst). When I found out I was pregnant with twins I immediately started googling pregnant twin moms and reading blogs and the majority of them talk about the issues they ran into while pregnant and how they weren’t sleeping, were super uncomfortable etc, and so I fully, fully expected to feel the same way, and much earlier on. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that this is my first pregnancy, I am not running after any other kiddos (that sounds so hard!) and I work from home or at coffee shops and can essentially rest whenever I feel the need. I was at the hospital last night (more on that below, too!) and there was a girl there who was 20ish weeks and experiencing a lot of swelling because she’s on her feet all day long, and I felt so grateful that I am able to stay off my feet a lot while prego with these twins.
But, anyways, onto the real update!
weeks 28 & 29
The twins: I feel like a broken record when I say this, but according to my baby app, they’re about 2.5lbs, 15.2″ long and are about the size of cauliflowers! I go for another growth scan a week from Tuesday so we will have a better idea of how big they actually are then.
Baby positions: At our doula apt last Friday we told her that baby A is now breech, and she didn’t like hearing that and told us she’d love him to flip by our next apt (which is coming up this Weds). If baby A is breech, a natural vaginal birth is pretty much not an option because my dr. will only deliver baby B breech, not both babies. So, she mentioned I see a chiropractor, which I did yesterday to try to move him. I’ve heard that some chiropractors are able to make adjustments to pregnant moms in order to align the ligaments and joints so that the baby (or babies) have more room, so I was pretty excited to go try it out for myself. She made some adjustments and basically told me to come back if he is still breech at our next ultrasound – then she will get “more aggressive” (scary). Our doula also mentioned an inversion board, which is basically a board that flips you upside down and has been shown to help flip breech babies. So, if you know my husband, you know that he has already read all about these boards being good for other things (like your back, brain health etc…) and he runs out and gets one when I was in Dallas. I swear his eyes lit right up when she mentioned this board because that was basically his green light to go get one. So, I come home from Dallas and he’s carrying this massive board into our small apartment and now it’s taking up all the space. He also had me get on it so he could be confident I could use it while he traveled for work all week, and it was terrifying and June is so scared of it now because I was screaming when I got flipped upside down. BUT, if there comes a time late in the game when we need to flip baby A, I will sacrifice;) Exhibit A.
Movement: Babies have been moving so much the past two weeks, especially baby B. Baby B is on my right side and he is definitely head up and his head is putting lots of pressure under my ribs when I am sitting. It’s not painful, just pressure. I mentioned above that baby A was head-up, or breech, at our last ultrasound, but I wasn’t really able to feel a lot of movement from him this past week. I felt kicks low in my belly, but didn’t know if that was baby A or baby B…so I ended up calling the Dr. on call last night and he wanted me to go into labor and delivery just to make sure both babes were doing well. Luckily our hospital is about 5 minutes away and it was super easy to go in and get monitored. At first they couldn’t find baby A’s heartbeat because we figured he was head-up and they were looking for it in the wrong spot, but turns out he flipped and he’s head down, and they found his heartbeat way below my belly button. Turns out both babies are doing just fine and baby B was of course kicking and punching the entire time he was being monitored and baby A wasn’t moving as much (I think this is just the beginning of seeing their personalities come out). So, crisis averted, and I’m really glad we went just to make sure all is well. As I type, baby B is moving like crazy and so is baby A. This is definitely the coolest part of being pregnant!
What I’m eating/not liking: Still drinking my protein green smoothie every day and loving it. Check out my 27 week post for the recipe. I need to make it an official recipe on the blog too! I really don’t have any aversions these days which is so nice. I’ve heard nausea from the first trimester can come back in the third, but I am crossing my fingers that doesn’t happen. I have noticed I can’t eat super large meals anymore. I get full much quicker and this started last week. Even my smoothie makes me so full that I can’t eat anything else for a few hours afterwards. So, smaller meals are my new norm! I try to eat protein at each meal and have been loving having sliced roasted chicken breasts in the fridge for whenever I am hungry. The chicken seems to have replaced my dairy obsession, so I am no longer eating an entire 32oz container of whole milk greek yogurt in 4 days;) Still loving my whole milk, especially with cereal (see below..YUM). I think I’ll make some homemade granola this weekend just to make my cereal habit a little healthier. I’m also still loving all things iced. Mitch got me a new insulated cup last weekend that keeps my ice water (or tea, or kombucha) cold for hours and I carry it everywhere. Thanks husband!
Wearing: Still wearing all of the same things – tank tops, shorts, yoga pants, h&m dresses etc. I started liking my maternity shorts again so started wearing those this week, but I am still not a fan of maternity clothes! I would love to get through the rest of this pregnancy without having to buy anything else so hopefully that happens! I will say, I bought a new pair of lulu lemon pants and I am obsessed. They are flattering and so comfy. I have them in the Greyvy (gray and navy yes please). I haven’t been able to wear a lot of my regular leggings while pregnant because they’re too tight or too thick and are super uncomfortable so I was really excited to find these.
Sleeping: Still fine! I feel like I sleep with all sorts of pillows surrounding my body or with my Snoogle and I am really comfy for the most part. No complaints here!
Names: We have baby B’s first and middle name and baby A’s first name. Still haven’t chosen a middle for A but we have lots of options.
Bump: Obviously bigger (and I obviously never make the bed). Below is a pic of my friends and I after we did Pure Bare last weekend in Dallas and you can definitely tell I’m bigger. I’m also wearing those lulu pants again – told you I love them! My friend Jill is also pregnant with a boy and she’s 21 weeks! She owns the PB we went to, and she is the most in-shape pregnant person ever. She did a PB class the day she went into labor with her first babe – she’s super impressive.
Exercise: I’ve started walking June bug every night, despite my worries about Zika. My normal get-up consists of long leggings and long sleeves and I use so much bug spray on June and myself. After lots of research this is what I use! I also drive to a path instead of walking by a really swampy area and I never see any mosquitos! It’s amazing what walking does for my mood and it’s my favorite thing to do at the end of the day. I still go to the gym and walk, do squats, arm weights etc, probably 2-3x/week.
Baby purchases: I went to Babies R Us this week because I had a few things I needed to return and ended up using my credit to buy something off my Amazon registry. FYI Babies R Us will price match, and I noticed the bouncer I wanted to buy was $199 at their store, and was $138 on our registry, and they honored that price. YAY. Here’s the bouncer – it’s on the pricey side but it’s just so sleek and I couldn’t resist;) I also know we will have more kids (hopefully) and it will be used again for sure. My friends (above) also got us our highchairs and gave them to us at our mini-shower in Dallas. Love them! We went with the Phil & Ted’s Highchairs because I am obsessed with anything that looks easy to clean and these fit the bill.
Nursery: No progress here! We’re finally in town this weekend so will be working on it. Look out for a post in the next couple of weeks devoted to the nursery!
Supplements: Same as before. Check out my pregnancy supplement post for more info.
Glucose test (to test for Gestational Diabetes): Ew! I hated this test and was dreading it. Whenever I eat a lot of sugar I feel kind of awful and always seem to need a nap after (pretty big indication I don’t have the best blood sugar control), so I was not looking forward to it. I ended up passing (barely!) and was so happy. Basically you go in, they give you a drink with 50mg of glucose (this is almost as much sugar that would be in two cans of Coke). I was apprehensive about drinking this because I’ve heard it is orange-colored and I didn’t want to drink all of that artificial coloring, but I was happy my Dr. carries the clear kind without any artificial orange color. So, they give you 5 minutes to drink it, and they’re literally staring at you as you do, then you wait an hour and get your blood drawn to see where your blood sugar is. The rest of the day I felt really foggy and out of it and had to take a long nap. I didn’t really feel any better until the next day. I was reallly hoping I would pass so I wouldn’t have to do the follow-up test that involves the same drink but double the amount of glucose and they test your blood sugar three times over the course of three hours. This sounded awful to me, so I was happy to hear I passed. Like I said, I barely passed (they want you below 139 and I was at 136) so I still need to be careful with sugar intake.
What’s next: I have an apt with my OB on Weds and another doula apt the same day, and then we see our Maternal Fetal Medicine Dr. the following week (31 weeks) for another growth scan.
Weight gain: Still gaining 2lbs/week pretty consistently, so I think I am at 27 lbs now? I will let you know for sure when I go to my OB next week!
Stretch marks: None so far!
Any worries? I just want baby A to stay head-down and I will be happy! I also want to stay pregnant until 36 weeks so that the twins are plump and have well-developed lungs. My Dr. won’t let me go past 38 weeks, so they will definitely be born before then – crazy!
